Fly Kathmandu-Lukla, Trek to Chhutang |
5 hours |
(3150m) |
| |
An early start to fly from Kathmandu
to Lukla. As there is a very strict limit of 15 kilos luggage
per person on this spectacular flight most of the group climbing
gear is sent on with the crew who travel by bus. After lunch
in Lukla we head to Chhutanga through forests of pine and rhododendron.
|
| 5 |
CHHUTANGA – THULI KHARKA |
6-7 hours |
(4200m) |
| |
After breakfast we walk through the
forest of pine trees to a yak kharka where we stop for lunch,
before heading up the hill of Chhatra La. It’s a long
steady climb so take your time and rest often to enjoy the views.
From Chhatra La it’s an hour to our camp at Thuli Kharka,
where there no lodges and only a small local teahouse. |

THULI KHARKA - KOTHE |
6 hours |
(4320m) |
| |
Although there are two routes we follow
the easier low route. We gradually head down through forests
of pine and fern to Sallageri where we rest for lunch. After
lunch there is some more forest walking before we follow the
Hinku River to our campsite at Kothe where there are many local
teahouses. |
| 7 |
KOTHE – THAGNAG |
6 hours |
(4320m) |
| |
We follow the river again to reach
Thagnag, where most people take an acclimatisation day before
heading to Khare. Below Thagnag is a place of worship (vihar)
for the local Buddhists, where it is believed we will get good
luck for our trip if we make offerings. There are some local
teahouses here. |
| 8 |
THAGNAG – ACCLIMATISATION |
|
(4320m) |
| |
Here we rest a little, walk around
the area and make sure that we have all the gear we need for
the summit. If we need more, we can buy them here. It might
also be your last chance to stock up on chocolate bars. |
| 9 |
THAGNAG – KARE |
5 hours |
(4356m) |
| |
It is a slight ascent to Khare up a green hill
with no trees. Here again we have an acclimatisation day tomorrow
to prepare for the summit. There are many local houses here.

| 10 |
KHARE– ACCLIMATISATION
|
|
|
| |
We can walk for a few hours on the hills around
the village before heading back to camp to make final preparations
for the summit bid. We can leave behind the gear we don’t
need for the summit, as well as anyone who is not up to the
climb. We’ll be reunited in a few days time. |
| 11 |
KHARE – MERA HIGH CAMP |
6 hours |
(5415m) |
| |
We leave Khare early to head through the moraine
for about 2 hours, before walking through ice the rest of the
way to high camp. Here is our last chance to rest before the
peak tomorrow, so relax and enjoy the view. It will be an early
night as we have to start early for the summit. |
| 12 |
HIGH CAMP – SUMMIT – KHARE |
8 hours |
(4356m) |
| |
| We leave camp early to attack
the summit by walking through the ice fall (roped together)
and then on fixed ropes as we near the summit. From the
summit there will be views of the villages of Thagnag
and Khare, as well as Makalu (8463m), Hinku Peak, Barun
Tse (7129m), Lhotse (8516m), Nuptse (7855m), Ama Dablam
(6812), Kanchenjunga (8586m) and Everest (8848m). After
a rest to enjoy the view and take some photos we head
back down to camp, where we will enjoy a well earned meal
and a sleep. |
 |
|
| 13 |
KHARE – KOTHE |
6 hours |
(3650m) |
| |
We have a long gradual descent to Thagnag for
lunch, where we also collect our gear and fellow trekkers who
have been waiting here for us, before following the Hinku River
to our campsite. There is a chance to see many birds in this
area. |
| 14 |
