Fly to Simikot in the morning and
spend the rest of the day preparing for the trek and looking
around the small trading town of Simikot which is the capital
of the Humla region. Note that this is also a buffer day should
the Simikot flight be cancelled. |

Simikot - Tuling |
4 hours |
2290 |
Easy |
| |
We introduce ourselves to trekking
in the remote Himalaya with a short downhill walk to the hamlet
of Tuling on the banks of the Humla Karnali river - whose
course we follow to the lakes of Manasarovar and Rakshas Tal.
The village people here are Thakuri, the women folk can be
identified by necklaces of silver coins which are sometimes
woven into the hair with small cowry shells. |

Tuling - Kermi |
6 hours |
2670 |
Easy |
| |
Another easy day on the trail today
with a mild ascent past walnut and apricot trees along the bank
of the Humla Karnali to the first Bhuddist village on our trek
of Kermi. During the day we pass the point where rice can be
cultivated near the small but pretty waterfall at Chachera.
|

Kermi - Yangar |
5 hours |
3040 |
Easy |
| |
The morning begins with a descent
through lush maple and fern forest into the narrowing Humla
Karnali valley to a bridge over the Chhungsa Khola (or Sale
Khola). The trail now climbs to Yangar through a lovely forest
of Himalayan blue pine and spruce to our camp near the Namka
Khyungdzong Gompa (monastery) which is linked to the ancient
Shepeling Gompa near Taklakot. |
| 8 |
Yanger - Torea |
6 hours |
3390 |
Easy |
| |
As we continue up valley the trail
becomes narrower and a little treachurous on our approach to
Muchu (site of the Kharsapani Gompa) and another check post.
We now enter the tributary valley of the Kumuchhiya Khola and
pass the Mota Gompa which is 350 years old. Our camp is now
not far at Torea |
| 9 |
Torea - Sipsip |
5 hours |
433 |
Moderate |
| |
Now we begin to feel the
altitude! Our trail climbs up towards the Tibetan plateau
and there is a noticeable change in the people and dwellings.
We pass the final Nepali check post at Yari before reaching
our camp for a good nights rest at Sipsip.

Sipsip - Taklakot |
6 hours |
4720 |
Moderate |
| |
Another day of uphill grind
to the Nara La (pass) - one of the lowest into Tibet from
Nepal - where we can enjoy a view of the arid mountains of
Tibet rolling away across the plateau before us contrasting
with the verdant Saipal and Api Himal behind us. Then it's
downhill to the border post at Taklakot (Purang in Tibetan)
and after formalities on to our camp. |
| 11 |
Taklakot - Manasarovar |
all day |
4570 |
Easy |
| |
We begin our pilgrimage to
this most sacred region with an obligatory trip to Manasarovar
and the opportunity to visit the Chiu (Little Bird) Gompa
- a stunning monastery which is where Guru Rimpoche spent
his last seven days on earth. It is an imposing site with
Mt Kailash in the background. And if you are feeling up to
it then take a ritual dip in the lake to wash away the sins
of a hundred lifetimes!
|
| 12 |
Manasarovar - Darchen - Sershung |
5 hours |
4710 |
Easy |
| |
We now head to Darchen for
our Kora of Mt Kailash. Darchen means 'flag pole' and is the
traditional starting point of the Kora, but it is not a great
camping spot so we will continue towards Sershung - about
three hours along the trail. This first section of the Kora
is famous for the annual Saga Dawa Festival (usually around
May) which celebrates the enlightenment of Bhudda. We also
pass Drachom Ngagye Durto sky-burial site where there is also
the first of the Bhudda footprints. We then cross into the
scenic Lha Chu valley a stunning desert valley with crystal
streams and Mt Kailash towering above.
|
| 13 |
Sershung - Drira Phuk |
4 hours |
4860 |
Easy |
| |
Today is a short trekking
section which allows us time to explore either/both the Chuku
Gompa and the Drira Phuk Gompa. Throughout the day the Lha
Chu valley narrows and our trail steepens a little as we begin
to round the northern face of Mt Kailash. Also if time permits
we will climb up to the Ganjam Chu valley (about 3 hour round
trip) which has some excellent views of the Kailash massif
rising above the Ganjam Chu glacier. |
| 14 |
Drira Phuk - Drolma La - Zutrul Phuk |
10 hours |
5470 |
Moderate |
| |
After an
early breakfast we start to climb up hill to a large 'sin-testing'
boulder which has a narrow passage beneath - only those who
are free of sin can squeeze through! The pass is now only
about an hour away and our breathing becomes laborious as
we climb the switchbacks. The Drolma La is spectacular despite
not having views of Mt Kailash - prayer flags attached to
the sacred Drolma Do (Rock of Tara) festoon the pass and from
here the atmosphere becomes festive as we head downhill. We
head down to Gauri Kunde (Bathing Pool of Compassion) where
only the Hindu pilgrims take a ritual bath if it is not too
icy! Then it's steeply down hill to the grassy meadows along
side the Lham Chu where the trail becomes easier as we descend
to Zutrul Phuk (Cave of Miracles) Gompa - a meditation cave
containing an image of Milarepa.
|
| 15 |
Zutrul Phuk - Darchen |
4 hours |
4520 |
Easy |
| |
We now have another short day to finish
our Kora to Darchen and this gives us time to explore the oldest
monastery at Kailash, Gyandrak Gompa and to take in what is
perhaps the best view of Mt Kailash from a point near Selung
Gompa. The day begins with the Dzong Chu river valley narrowing
into an impressive gorge bounded by cliffs and hills in a kaleidoscope
of colours. We then leave the river and return to the arid country
with which we are so familiar and past the final protestation
place along a dusty trail to Darchen. |
| 16 |
Darchen - Taklakot |
all day |
3720 |
Easy |
| |
We are now tired and contented as
we drive away from Mt Kailash between the two holy lakes of
Mansarovar and Rakas to Taklakot and our overnight camp. For
those who are keen there is a 3 hour round trip trek up to the
ruined Shepeling Gompa, once the largest in Tibet. This is a
magical place from which to enjoy the last views of Mt Kailash
before we head back to Nepal. NOTE it is 4 days driving to Shigatse
from here or 1 day to Tholing. |
| 17 |
Taklakot - Hilsa |
2 hours |
3720 |
Easy |
| |
We now head to the border past the
village of Khochar (Khojarnath) and one of the oldest Gompas
in Western Tibet. Kochar was founded in 996 and is an eerie
and dark place overlooked by stuffed animal’s heads which
are protectors - they must have worked because the Gompa survived
the Cultural Revolution by being a grain store. From here the
border is only a few kilometres away where we undergo formalities
and head onto our camp at Hilsa. |
| 18 |
Hilsa – Yari |
8 hours |
3670 |
Moderate |
| |
It's back over the pass and into the
lushness of Nepal and our familiar trail takes us to Yari. |
| 19 |
Yari - Muchu |
7 hours |
3120 |
Easy |
| |
The juniper bushes beside our trail
seem out of place compared to the arid expanses of Tibet as
we head onto the Nepal border check post at Muchu and our camp
site. |
| 20 |
Muchu - Yalbang |
7 hours |
3020 |
Easy |
| |
As we know the trail and its
sights we may take a little time to explore the mediaeval
fortress village of Yangkar which is similar to those found
in the Mustang region. |
| 21 |
Yalbang - Tuling |
7 hours |
2290 |
Easy |
| |
We head back through the last of the
Tiobetan villages and wish our last Tashi Deleks! By the end
of the day we are back in the Hindu dominated mid-hills and
Tibet seems so far away. |
| 22 |
Tuling - Simikot |
4 hours |
2950 |
Easy |
| |
The final climb up to Simikot leaves
us breathing heavily again, but tonight we celebrate as this
is the last on the trail, it is time to reminisce and plan the
next trip! |
